CAT4 Paper Trial

Why are we conducting a usability trial?

We are updating the way our CAT4 paper assessment is administered in schools and how we collect the answer sheet scores. We are recruiting current CAT4 paper customers to administer our test in the summer and autumn terms of 2025.

What is involved in the trial?

Primary and Secondary schools are invited to complete our paper-based CAT4 assessment with a cohort or group of students. They will then complete a survey with their feedback on the ease of use.

Register here:

  • Once registered, schools will need to upload participating students' data to our Testwise platform. This data will allow us to create personalised answer sheets that can be printed in school, or sent by us directly to you.

  • Participating schools will be required to select a date to administer the assessment with their pupils.

  • Schools will either complete our “self-serve” assessment, which will involve scanning and uploading the results onto our test site, or our “Ren-serve" service, where answer sheets will be posted back to us for marking.

  • We will then ask for feedback on this service.

  • Results will be made available on customer schools' Testwise site once the answer sheets have been scanned. Customers will have access to a range of reports, including combination reports if they have also assessed the same students with NGRT, PTE and/or PTM.

Why take part?

  • It’s simple and easy to take part, and there is no additional cost involved.

  • You will be the first to make use of our new and improved processes.

  • You will have the opportunity to help shape our CAT4 paper process.

  • Your school will receive a voucher worth £100 for either Amazon or National Book Tokens.

Who is eligible to participate?

We are recruiting primary and secondary schools in England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland to take part in this trial. Pupils from Years 3 – 13 (Scottish P3 – S6, Northern Ireland P3 – Year 12, Eire 2nd class - 6th year).

What are the requirements to participate?

  • A contact person at the school

  • One or more students to assess with CAT4 (3 x 45 minute assessment sessions)

  • A quiet room or hall to administer the assessment.

What kind of results will I receive?

Schools will receive full Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) results for participating students. CAT4 reveals hidden potential by assessing the main types of reasoning ability known to make a difference to learning and achievement, providing you with a rounded profile of the whole child: verbal, quantitative, non-verbal and spatial reasoning. CAT4 reports for primary-aged students include indicators for KS2; reports for students in Y6 upwards also include indicators for GCSE and/or A level subjects.
