Suffolk Reading Scale (SRS) - Decommissioning FAQs
1. What is happening to the Suffolk Reading Scale (SRS)?
The Suffolk Reading Scale (SRS) will be decommissioned and will no longer be available or supported after 31st October 2025.
2. Why is SRS being withdrawn?
SRS is no longer supported and references outdated curriculum content and formats, making it unsuitable for today’s classrooms.
3. Can I still use SRS if I already have it?
Yes, you may continue using any SRS materials you already own. Please note that updates, replacements, and customer support will no longer be available after 31st October 2025.
4. Is there a recommended alternative to SRS?
Yes. We recommend the New Group Reading Test (NGRT) as a modern alternative to SRS. It is quicker to test students, has a more flexible test format and better guidance to support your students.
5. How does NGRT compare to SRS?
NGRT offers several advantages over SRS:
Shorter test time: NGRT takes around 30 minutes, compared to SRS’s 50 minutes.
Wider age range: NGRT covers ages 5–17, while SRS is limited to 6–14:11.
Flexible format: NGRT is available in both paper and digital formats, with adaptive functionality when taken online.
Richer reporting: NGRT provides a broader range of reports, including individual, group, progress, and cluster insights.
Up-to-date standardisation: NGRT is based on a larger, more recent sample and is aligned with current educational standards.
Better support: NGRT is one of our core assessments and is supported by a wide range of training and guidance materials.
6. Do I need training to use NGRT?
No specialist training is required. NGRT is designed to be easy to administer and interpret, with comprehensive support available for schools and educators. Please check our training and support pages for more information.
7. Where can I find more information about NGRT?
You can explore NGRT on our website or contact your customer service representative for tailored advice on how it can support your setting.
