Primary Reading Assessment Trial 2024

Register now for September!

What is a trial?

In a trial, students take an assessment containing new content, and the resulting data is analysed to select the fairest and most effective questions for use in the final version of the test.

Why is this content being developed?

The new content will go into our adaptive reading assessment, NGRT. Due to increased usage of this assessment, we decided to extend and supplement existing reading comprehension content with new passages and questions to ensure that students see a wide variety of texts.

What is NGRT?

The New Group Reading Test (NGRT) is a standardised assessment to measure reading skills of students aged 6-16 years against the national average. Through a variety of exercises, NGRT can assess students’ knowledge of phonics, comprehension, decoding ability, vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, deduction and inference skills, authorial intent, and ability to deal with figurative and idiomatic language (depending on the age of the student and test selected). Tasks include sentence completion, passage comprehension and phonic exercises. NGRT tests not just the ability of students to decode what they read, but also to comprehend and apply meaning.

What is involved in the trial?

Schools with pupils in years 2-4 (Scottish and Northern Irish P3-P5) are invited to participate in a digital trial of new NGRT content between now and 27 September 2024.

  1. Register to take part:

  2. Upload a pupil data template for scoring and reporting purposes.

  3. Administer the digital tests at any time before 27 September 2024. The test is untimed but normally takes around 30-40 minutes.

  4. You will receive pupil reports in October 2024.

Please note: your pupil data will be used to analyse the effectiveness of the new assessment content but will not be shared externally outside of GL, except to provide you with raw scores for your own students.

Why take part?

  • It’s simple and easy to take part, and there is no cost involved.

  • You don’t need to do any marking and will receive pupil reports showing raw scores as well as percentile scores in relation to other trial participants.

  • Your school will receive an incentive payment of £1.50 per pupil, plus a free 3-month subscription to myON, a digital reading platform that enables rich language opportunities both in and outside of the classroom.*

*Cash incentives are limited so early registration is advised. Tests must be completed before 27 September 2024.

Who is eligible to participate?

Only students who have NOT taken NGRT within the last year are eligible to participate. This is to ensure that familiarity with the test does not compromise the trial results. For the same reason, pupils who participate in the trial should not take NGRT Form C for at least a year after the trial to ensure that their results are accurate.

What are the requirements to participate?

  • A contact person at the school
  • A data file with details of all participating pupils. We will provide instructions on how to transfer this securely.
  • Pupils will need access to one of the devices listed below linked to a good network or wifi connection.
  • Headphones will be needed for the introductory section.

What devices can be used?

  • PCs/desktops

  • iPads*

  • Android tablets*

  • iMacs

  • Chromebooks

A mouse is recommended for desktops and Chromebooks.

* Minimum screen size of 10”

What kind of results will I receive?

You will receive each pupil's raw score, as well as their T-score and broad ability band in comparison to the other participants in the trial. It is important to note that the trial sample is relatively small and may not be fully representative of the population, so these results will not be as statistically valid as those of a live, standardised test.
