Information for parents

The Progress Test in Maths (PTM) is a test designed to assess each student’s attainment in Maths. It is tailored to the age of the child. Mental Maths is included for students aged 8-14.

PTM measures students’ mathematical skills and knowledge in areas such as number, shape, data handling and algebra, as well as their mathematical reasoning and problem solving.

The Progress Test in Maths series consists of 12 tests. 11 of these tests cover the age range 4 to 14+ years (PTM 5 to 15). There is an additional test for students aged between 11 and 12 years, which can be used as a transition test on entry to secondary education (Progress Test in Maths 11T).

Reports are set against national averages so that teachers can compare the results with those of schools across the country.

The Progress Test in Maths series gives teachers useful information. The test results can help teachers:

• To identify students who need additional support or extension work
• To identify patterns of performance and areas for development for the whole class 
• To compare students with others in the same age group nationally 
• To compare a student’s progress from one year to the next
• To measure a student's baseline, progress, effectiveness of interventions or knowledge retained over the school break (when administered twice in the year)

PTM is taken under formal test conditions. However, it is not a timed test. Students will be given as long as they need to complete it. It can also be taken over two or more sessions with breaks in between each part.
