What is LASS?
LASS 8-11 is a formative assessment that is used to identify a student’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses. These include:
- dyslexia (or specific learning difficulty)
- underlying problems in memory or phonological processing skills
- development of reading/spelling skills
It is made up of nine subtests, each of which is presented as an engaging and interactive game.
How is LASS used?
LASS is usually taken by students who have a high probability of dyslexia or other specific learning difficulty, to pinpoint specific areas of need.
How does LASS compare to an exam?
LASS is a formative assessment, which means that it does not count towards any formal mark or grade. It is however taken in controlled conditions, to ensure accurate and individual responses.
The test should take approximately 30-45 minutes in total, and is taken digitally on a computer, laptop or tablet.
Should my child revise or train for LASS? Can I get practice tests?
We advise against any practicing or training in order to get a fair assessment of students' abilities at that moment in time. There are practice questions in the assessment to get students familiar with the tasks they are being asked to do.

If you have any concerns or questions about the test, please contact your school. Please note that only schools can buy the LASS assessment.
