Baseline provides a range of data that can support and inform Early Years practitioners at an early point in a pupil’s school career. Traditionally and very appropriately assessment has been carried out through observation and this will continue to provide rich and detailed information about every pupil. Now this can be set alongside some quantitative information at the beginning of a learning process; this may well highlight aspects of a pupil’s development that may not have become apparent until later or confirm a teacher’s view of a pupil’s stage of development.
Through the analysis and narrative that are part of the Individual student report for teachers some additional diagnostic information is available. Again, this adds to the quantitative information with supplementary information for the teacher that may help with planning and intervention.
A further assessment of Literacy and Maths is available for use at the end of the school year. By using both assessments, a measure of progress will be available.
Group report for teachers
This report provides an overview of the group. The report includes a Standard Age Score (SAS).
Individual student report for teachers
The reports provide narrative written by Early Years specialists that gives suggestions, based on the pupil’s scores, for teachers to apply to learning in the classroom. The report also take a closer look at the pupil’s scores including an analysis of questions in each category.
Individual report for parents
Schools can choose to share this report, or elements of it, with parents. This report includes narrative with suggestions for parents to aid their child’s learning at home. These suggestions compliment the recommendations made for the teacher in the classroom.
Provides an overview of the results across a cohort, LA or school group. This will support ongoing progress monitoring and help you compare pupil’s progress across each group.
- GL Assessment worked with 50 schools during the autumn term 2014 to collect data on a sample of 1560 children in England - the basis for the standardisation.
- 500 children were also reassessed to ensure reliability and consistency.
- EAL pupils constituted 18% of the sample, which is nationally representative.
- We took feedback from teachers who administered Baseline as our basis of guidance on how to use the assessment with children with SEND.
What can I do with the reports?
- Measure a pupil's stage in literacy,language and mathematics
- Inform intervention at the earliest opportunity
- Support ongoing progression of each pupil and allow teaching and learning to be tailored accordingly
- Measure progress from Baseline to end of Reception using Baseline Progress.
What information will I get from the reports?
The following data will be provided for the three sections with a Literacy and Language combined score, separate Mathematics score and an overall score:
- Standard Age Score (SAS): the SAS is based on the pupil's raw score which has been adjusted for age and placed on a scale that makes a comparison with a nationally representative sample of pupils of the same age. The average score is 100. The SAS is key to benchmarking and tracking progress and is the fairest way to compare the performance of different pupils within a year group or across year groups.
- National Percentile Rank (NPR): the NPR relates to the SAS and indicates the percentage of students obtaining any particular score. NPR of 50 is average. NPR of 5 means that the pupil's score is within the lowest 5% of the national sample; NPR of 95 means that the pupil's score is within the highest 5% of the national sample.
- Stanine (ST): the ST places the pupil's score on a scale of 1 (low) to 9 (high) and offers a broad overview of his or her performance.
- Group Rank (GR): The GR shows how each pupil has performed in comparison to those in the defined group.
- T Score: This is the scale score that will be returned to the DfE. It ranges from 20 to 80 with 50 as the average.
The reports will contain narrative and recommendations written by Early Years specialists including:
- Statement(s) comparing phoneme awareness with language
- Statement(s) for maths
